I just wanted to try and draw a bit of attention to the fantastic 1in5 initiative. Found on facebook (facebook https://www.facebook.com/explore1in5/timeline) the 1in5 initiative is a community set up to bring support to those navigating the world with Specific Learning Differences, such as Dyslexia. More importantly though, this online community raises awareness regarding the percentage of the population who are believed to have Dyslexia. Dyslexia is said to be prevalent in as many as 1 in 5 people, a theory hugely supported by The Yale Center of Dyslexia and Creativity and it's founders Drs Sally and Bennett Shaywitz (http://www.dyslexia.yale.edu/). As a huge advocate for the ethos of Neurodiversity, my work normally discusses the 'spectrums' of learning differences rather than definitive 'They are/are not Dyslexic' discussions, however I believe that this initiative is crucial to raising awareness to the severe need for educational change both in the UK and in the USA. Recently the initiative launched it's #showme1in5 campaign in which people from all over the USA and UK sent in photos highlighting the #1in5 slogan. It was inspiring to see so many teachers, parents and children proudly displaying their 1in5 slogans in such creative ways. The above image was my own #showme1in5 photo, my Alaskan Malamute Sky proudly supporting the work of 1in5. Head over to facebook and give them a 'like' for their incredible work.
